Victron Orion XS 12/12-70A DC-DC Battery Charger — 1000W, Bluetooth (Highest-Output Alternator Charger)

The Victron Orion XS 12/12-70A is the highest-output charger in the Orion XS family — 70A of charge current and up to 1000W, a 40% step up from the 50A model. It is the right choice when you have the alternator capacity to feed it and want to refill a large lithium house bank in the time it takes to drive somewhere.

Like the rest of the XS range it runs at up to 98.5% efficiency, so very little of what your alternator produces is lost as heat — and the unit itself stays cooler in a confined install than the older Orion-Tr generation.

Built for modern smart alternators

Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles use ECU-controlled alternators that vary their output and shut down when not needed, often supplying a charging voltage too low to be useful at the end of a long cable run. The Orion XS uses automatic buck-boost control, so the output voltage is fully adjustable and stays independent of the input — it will boost a sagging alternator voltage up to what your battery actually needs.

Integrated engine shutdown detection means the charger only draws power when the alternator is actually running. No extra ignition sense wiring, no D+ signal to find, no aftermarket sensor to fit.

Why this matters for lithium

Lithium batteries have very low internal resistance, which means they will pull everything an alternator can give and then some. Connected directly, that is how alternators get cooked. The Orion XS caps current at exactly the value you set, in 0.1A steps, so you can match the charger to what your alternator can actually sustain rather than what your battery would like to take.

• Doubles as a fixed-voltage power supply — stable output regardless of load or input fluctuation

Monitoring

Bluetooth for setup and live monitoring in VictronConnect, VE.Direct for a wired connection to a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX (including DVCC control), and VE.Smart Networking for remote voltage and temperature sensing from a SmartShunt, BMV or Smart Battery Sense. Remote access through the VRM Portal when connected to a GX device.

Sizing notes before you order

• Check your alternator. At 70 A output the charger can draw well over 70 A on the input side. Confirm your alternator can sustain that continuously, not just in short bursts, or set a lower current limit in VictronConnect.
• Cable and fuse both sides. Terminals accept up to 25 mm² (4 AWG); size conductors for the run length and fuse both the input and output per the manual.
• Leave room for airflow. The 1000 W figure assumes the mounting and clearance shown in the manual. In a tight cabinet it will derate sooner.
• If your alternator is 24 V, you want the Orion XS 1400 (24/12-50A) instead. If 70 A is more than your alternator can give, the Orion XS 12/12-50A is the same charger at 50 A.
