Home Battery Backup Systems
Home Battery Backup Systems
Keep the lights on during outages, reduce your utility bill with solar self-consumption, or cut the grid entirely — Victron’s ESS platform scales from a simple backup to a fully off-grid home.
What Are You Trying to Do?
Home battery systems serve different goals. Pick the build that matches yours — all three use the same Victron ESS platform and can be expanded later.
Grid Backup
Keep essentials running during outages. No solar required — batteries charge from the grid and discharge when power goes out.
Solar + Storage
Maximize solar self-consumption. Use what you generate during the day, pull from battery at night, grid as backup only.
Full Off-Grid
No utility connection. Solar + battery + generator covers 100% of home load. Common for rural properties and cabins.
Generator Supplement
Already have a generator? Add batteries and solar so the generator only runs when batteries are low — dramatically cutting fuel use and run-hours.

Key Victron Components
Home systems run at 48V for efficiency and safety — the same voltage used in commercial energy storage. Victron’s ESS platform ties all devices together into a single managed system.
Inverter / Charger
Heart of the system. Inverts DC battery power to AC for your home, charges from grid or generator, and transfers automatically during outages — typically in under 20ms. Multiple units stack for higher power.
MPPT Solar Charge Controller
Handles large residential solar arrays. The 450/100 accepts up to 5,800W of panels on a 48V system. Multiple MPPTs in parallel handle arrays in different orientations or roof sections independently.
System Brain + ESS
Runs Victron’s ESS algorithm — decides when to charge from grid (cheap rates), when to discharge to load, when to export, and when to start the generator. Remote access via VRM from anywhere.
LiFePO4 Battery Bank
We recommend quality LiFePO4 cells with an active BMS — Victron Smart Lithium, EG4, or similar. 48V chemistry is safer, more efficient, and longer-lived than 12V for home-scale storage.
GX Touch 50 Display
5-inch touchscreen mounted anywhere in the home. Shows real-time solar production, battery state, grid draw, and load consumption. Pairs with the Cerbo GX — also accessible via VRM app on phone.
Lynx Distributor
Handles DC bus distribution for large home systems — fused connections for each battery string, inverter, and MPPT. Replaces a complex DC busbar + individual fuse setup with a clean, serviceable unit.
Size Your System
Home loads are much larger than mobile systems — HVAC alone can be 3–5kW. An honest load audit is the most important step before sizing batteries and solar.
System Load Audit
Add HVAC, fridge, well pump, lighting, appliances — get your true daily kWh demand and peak load in watts.
Battery Bank Sizing
Enter your daily kWh and days of backup — get the right kWh of storage for your goals.
Solar & MPPT Sizing
Size your residential solar array and select the right SmartSolar MPPT for a 48V system.
DC Wire Sizing
Size battery cables, MPPT runs, and DC distribution wiring for 48V home-scale systems.
Home Battery Pro Tips
Things that matter when designing a residential energy storage system that will run 24/7 for 10+ years.
⚡ Always Use 48V for Home Systems
At 48V, a 10kWh battery bank draws ~200A peak compared to 800A at 12V. Smaller, cheaper, safer wire. Lower heat. More efficient inverters. There’s no good reason to use 12V or 24V in a residential application — 48V is the standard for a reason.
🏠 Critical Loads Panel is Non-Negotiable
Rather than backing up your entire home (which requires a massive and expensive system), install a critical loads sub-panel for the circuits that matter: fridge, well pump, a few lights, internet, and phone charging. Your battery bank can be half the size for the same result.
📊 ESS Mode — Let Victron Optimize
Victron’s ESS (Energy Storage System) mode on the Cerbo GX intelligently manages the grid relationship: charges batteries at off-peak rates, maximizes solar self-consumption, exports excess, and only draws from grid when needed. It’s not just a backup — it’s an energy manager.
🔧 Size the Inverter for Peak Load, Not Average
Your average load might be 1–2kW, but a well pump starting draws 3–4kW, and a central AC compressor can pull 4–6kW at startup. Size your Quattro or MultiPlus-II stack to handle the largest simultaneous starting loads — undersize here and breakers trip at the worst moments.
🛢️ Generator Auto-Start Saves Fuel
The Cerbo GX has a built-in relay that triggers a generator’s auto-start input when battery voltage drops below a set threshold. The generator runs until batteries are back to 80%, then shuts off automatically. A properly set up auto-start system can cut generator run-hours (and fuel bills) by 70% vs. manual operation.
📝 Permits + Utility Interconnection
Grid-tied battery systems require an electrical permit and, if exporting solar, a utility interconnection agreement. Most Texas utilities have a relatively simple interconnection process for systems under 10kW. We help navigate the paperwork — don’t skip this step or you risk having the utility disconnect your meter.
