If you're shopping for a Victron inverter/charger, you've almost certainly hit this question: MultiPlus or MultiPlus-II? Both are excellent pieces of kit, both carry Victron's legendary build quality, and both will run your loads reliably for years. But they're not the same product, and picking the wrong one for your application is an expensive mistake.
Here's the plain-English breakdown.
What They Have in Common
Both the MultiPlus and MultiPlus-II are true sine wave inverter/chargers. They invert DC battery power to AC, charge your batteries from shore power or a generator, and do both simultaneously. Both integrate with VE.Bus, work with the Cerbo GX for remote monitoring, and support Victron's full ecosystem — VictronConnect, VRM, and DVCC.
If you're building a marine, RV, or off-grid system, either one will serve as the heart of it.
The Key Differences
1. PowerControl and PowerAssist
Both models include PowerControl (limiting the current drawn from shore power or a generator) and PowerAssist (supplementing AC input with battery power during peak demand). These features work the same way on both models.
2. ESS (Energy Storage System) — MultiPlus-II Only
This is the biggest functional difference. The MultiPlus-II is required for grid-tied ESS applications — systems that connect to the utility grid and use stored battery energy to offset consumption, sell back power, or provide UPS-style backup for a home or business.

You need the MultiPlus-II. The original MultiPlus cannot be used in ESS mode.
For marine and RV applications that never connect to the grid in an ESS configuration, this distinction usually doesn't matter.
3. Current Sensor Input — MultiPlus-II Only
The MultiPlus-II has a dedicated current sensor input on the board, used to measure grid import/export for ESS control. The MultiPlus does not have this input. Again, relevant for ESS/grid-tied installs; not relevant for off-grid or typical marine/RV builds.
4. Size and Form Factor
The MultiPlus-II is physically slightly larger than the MultiPlus at comparable power ratings. In tight marine or van installations, this can matter. Check the dimensional drawings for your specific model before committing.
5. Price
The MultiPlus-II is priced higher than the MultiPlus at equivalent power ratings. If you don't need ESS, you're paying for capability you won't use.
