How to Size a Victron SmartSolar MPPT: The Complete Guide

Getting your MPPT charge controller sizing right is one of the most important steps in building a reliable solar power system. Size it too small and you leave power on the table — or worse, damage the unit. Size it too large and you've wasted money. This guide walks you through the exact process we use when designing systems for our customers.
Step 1: Know Your Battery Voltage
Your MPPT must match your battery bank voltage. Victron SmartSolar MPPTs are available for 12V, 24V, and 48V systems. The battery voltage determines which models are compatible — get this locked in first.
Step 2: Calculate Your Solar Array's Open Circuit Voltage (Voc)
Every solar panel has a Voc (open circuit voltage) listed on the datasheet. When panels are wired in series, their voltages add up.
Example:
3 panels × 40V Voc = 120V array Voc
Critical rule: Your array Voc must never exceed the MPPT's maximum PV input voltage — and you must account for cold temperature. Cold panels produce higher voltage. Use this formula:
Cold-corrected Voc = Panel Voc × (1 + (temp_coefficient × (min_temp - 25)))
For most Texas installations, a 10–15% safety margin above your calculated Voc is sufficient. For northern climates, use 20–25%.
Victron MPPT max PV input voltages:
SmartSolar 75/xx series: 75V max
SmartSolar 100/xx series: 100V max
SmartSolar 150/xx series: 150V max
SmartSolar 250/xx series: 250V max
Step 3: Calculate Your Array's Short Circuit Current (Isc)
When panels are wired in parallel, their currents add up. Check the Isc on your panel datasheet.
Example:
2 strings in parallel × 10A Isc = 20A total Isc
Your array Isc must not exceed 1.15× the MPPT's maximum PV input current. Most Victron MPPTs are protected against overcurrent, but it's best practice not to push past the spec.
Step 4: Determine the Output Current (Charge Current)
The number after the slash in the MPPT model name is the maximum output (charge) current in amps.
Example: SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 = 100V max PV input, 30A max charge output
The charge current determines how fast you can charge your batteries. To find the minimum charge current you need:
Required charge current (A) = Total solar watts ÷ Battery voltage
Example: 600W array ÷ 12V battery = 50A → you need at least a 100/50 or larger
Victron's rule of thumb: size the MPPT so the charge current is at least 10–13% of your battery capacity (Ah) for a reasonable charge rate.
Step 5: Choose Your Model
Here's a quick reference for common system sizes:

Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Ignoring cold temperature Voc correction. In Texas this rarely trips people up, but in northern states a cold morning can push panel voltage above your MPPT's input limit and cause a fault or damage.
2. Under-sizing the charge current. A 200W panel on a 100/15 MPPT is technically compatible, but you're limiting your charging. Match charge current to your array size.
3. Mixing incompatible series strings. If you're wiring panels in series-parallel, all panels in a string must be identical (same model, same orientation). Mismatched panels create shading losses across the whole string.
4. Forgetting about cable losses. Long cable runs from panels to MPPT reduce effective voltage. Size your wire accordingly and keep runs as short as practical.
