The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A Non-Isolated DC-DC Charger is the budget alternator charger for most van and RV builds — same lithium-safe charging, same Bluetooth monitoring, same engine-start detection as the Isolated version, but without the galvanic isolation. About $30 cheaper. The right pick when input and output share a common chassis ground (which is true for almost every vehicle build).
Built-in Bluetooth lets you monitor and configure from your phone using the VictronConnect app. Works with lead-acid, AGM, gel, and lithium house batteries.
Non-Isolated vs Isolated — which one?
| Non-Isolated (this model) | Isolated | |
|---|---|---|
| SKU | ORI121236140 | ORI121236120 |
| Galvanic isolation | No — shared ground required | Yes |
| Required for marine | — | Usually yes |
| Best for | RVs, vans, simple installs where input and output share a chassis ground | Boats, shared chassis with isolation requirements, sensitive electronics |
| Price | $215.05 | $243.95 |
Choose Non-Isolated if: you're installing in a van, RV, truck, trailer, or any vehicle where the starter battery and house battery already share a chassis ground (essentially all road vehicles).
Choose Isolated if: you're installing on a boat, or you have a specific reason to keep input and output grounds separate.
Why a DC-DC charger instead of a battery isolator?
- Lithium-safe — modern alternators are not designed to charge lithium house batteries directly. Lithium banks pull huge current at low resistance, which overheats alternators. The Orion-Tr limits current and provides a proper charge profile.
- Three-stage charging — bulk, absorption, float (configurable for lead-acid or LiFePO4) instead of a constant-voltage dump from the alternator.
- Engine-start detection — auto-disables charging while engine is off so it won't drain your starter battery.
- Bluetooth monitoring — watch real-time current and battery status from your phone.
- Parallel-capable — chain unlimited units in parallel to scale up amperage (e.g., 2× = 60A, 3× = 90A).

Recommended applications
- Van Life / RV — most popular alternator charger for Sprinter, Promaster, Transit, and travel-trailer builds
- Overlanding — 4×4 or expedition vehicle with auxiliary house battery
- Truck campers — slide-in camper house battery
- Tow vehicles — trailer house battery charged while driving
- Mobile work — equipment battery in service truck powered from the engine
Need more than 30A?
Two options: parallel two Orion-Tr 30A units for 60A (~720W), or step up to the Orion XS 12/12-50A for a single higher-output unit. For high-amp applications, the Buck-Boost 100A is an option to consider.
