SmartSolar MPPT Setup
Your Victron SmartSolar MPPT is one of the smartest charge controllers on the market. Here’s how to wire it, connect it to Bluetooth, and get it talking to your Cerbo GX.
Connect the Battery First
Always connect the battery before the solar panels. Connect the MPPT’s battery terminals (B+ and B–) to your battery bank using appropriately sized cable. The MPPT powers up from the battery connection — you’ll see the LED indicators light up.
Check Your Solar Array Voltage
Before connecting panels, measure the open-circuit voltage (Voc) of your solar array with a multimeter. This must be below the MPPT’s maximum PV voltage (marked on the label — 75V, 100V, 150V, or 250V depending on your model). Never exceed this limit.
Connect the Solar Panels
Connect your solar panel(s) to the PV+ and PV– terminals on the MPPT. The MPPT will immediately begin harvesting power if there’s sufficient sunlight. The bulk LED will illuminate to indicate charging is active.
Connect via Victron Connect (Bluetooth)
Download the free Victron Connect app on iOS or Android. Open the app, tap your MPPT from the device list, and verify the charge voltage, current, and state. This is also where you set the battery type and charge profile.
Connect to Cerbo GX via VE.Direct
If you have a Cerbo GX, connect the MPPT using a VE.Direct cable (3.5mm to RJ12, included with the MPPT or available separately). Plug into any of the Cerbo’s VE.Direct ports. The MPPT will appear automatically on the Cerbo’s display and in VRM.
Verify on a Sunny Day
On your first sunny day, check Victron Connect or VRM to confirm the MPPT is producing close to your panel’s rated wattage. Some shading or early morning / late afternoon angles will reduce output — peak production happens when panels face the sun at midday.
